Now that our first team has returned from Haiti, our goal is to send additional teams in the next couple of months, but we are prayerfully considering and diligently working on a long-term plan to be most effective in our relief efforts in Haiti.

We are coordinating with contacts on the ground in Haiti to see what types of teams and supplies they most need next, as well as the logistics of where the teams will stay and what the teams will be able to most effectively accomplish.

We understand there are many people who have a heart to go to Haiti and we want to balance that with the ever-changing needs of the Haitian people, the practical logistics of getting people/supplies into and out of Haiti, the ability to be most effective in Haiti when we are there and, most importantly, God’s timing. If you want to donate supplies, go on a future team, or are interested in opportunities to serve now as we prepare for future Haiti Response efforts, please contact haitirelief@calvarycc.org or 818.575.2220. If you are already on the Future Team list, Chandra will keep you posted on developments as they occur.

Major Shootout while Craig McCord was preaching – Please Pray!

Prayer is needed. Even as this request was sent Helicopters were flying over!

The McCord Family made their journey into the interior of the Phillipines and arrived on Friday evening. On Saturday Jan.30, 2010 they were horrified to see soldiers, dropped from helicopters near their location. In addition to the other soldiers there were 28 heavily armed Filipino Army soldiers walking literally, right through their front yard (Brother Tolino’s house). There were young soldiers with M-16 A2’s, CAR-15’s, and M-14’s as well as grenade launchers, etc. Craig was very nervous because he had heard that there had been two big gunfights recently. Although the NPA is the theoretical enemy, stories were circulating of soldiers randomly taking hikers into custody on exactly the roads where they share the Gospel.

Sunday Jan. 31st 2010- Craig met with the elders before their church service, when a very large volume of shooting began., which was very close, less than a mile away and it continued for 40 minutes. Few people arrived at the service because of the very loud report of the weapons. Craig was prepared to preach on a particular topic but changed it to discuss “Prayer, the God of Peace and the Peace of God,” as revealed in Phil.4:4-10. The elders urged him to leave, but he went on with the service preaching on God’s peace, even as the rattle of gunfire and explosions continued. By the end of the service they could see soldiers carrying another soldier either dead or wounded across from the church.

Please pray for them in their new church and the people who live there who cannot simply leave the area when the shooting starts. Pray for the light of Jesus to pierce the darkness here and that His peace will reign there. There are so many barriers resulting from the demonic past. The land, and rice fields, the children the houses, have all been dedicated to demons in the past. All the rituals and sacrifices so faithfully observed for centuries has placed a satanic lock on this area and it will require significant prayer to break these strongholds. With bullets flying all over the trails they hike to minister to the villages, they have another very serious consideration to pray about. They are praying that God will give them a spirit of boldness (not recklessness) to preach the Gospel and encourage the churches. Please pray with the McCords and share this. They have NOT changed any of our plans to go to the remote places at this time. Ask that they “wait in hope upon the Lord; that He be their help and shield; that their hearts rejoice in Him, for they trust in His holy name. (Psalm 33: 20 & 21)!

Good Afternoon,

The following is an (edited) update taken from Scott’s Facebook page. New photos have been posted by Brian Field directly from his iPhone on www.Facebook.com/commworld. Our team is nearing the end of their time in Haiti. Final return-flight details are being confirmed. Please keep them in prayer as they prepare to leave a difficult and heartbreaking situation behind.

Mr. Bill’s Orphanage lost a wall and as such a group of about 20 bandits looking to steal supplies had to be quelled. At least one shot was fired by a policeman who lived near the orphanage but thankfully it was into the air. The warning shot was enough and today we are sending in team members to help restore the clinic (Security has also been reinforced so please do not worry, our team is safe.) Brian asked Bobby, one of our especially handy ex-Marines if he could go to Mr. Bill’s today and build some shelves hoping he had the necessary experience. Bobby laughed and replied, “That’s all I did in the Marines…build shelves.” So, once again those with the skills are being sent where they are needed most. For some of us that means lifting boxes, for others it’s purifying water, and in this case, it’s building shelves. Praise God!

I am exhausted. Not because I am overworked or underfed but because I have been trying to keep up with Doctor Dave–our 79 year old MD who finished work the other day, walked over to the hose and took a full body shower with scrubs and all.

…you know that we transported a man with a compound femur fracture and head laceration the other day…a tough man because he sat around for 15 days without medical attention and only complained of “moderate” pain…. I realized last night that the man is not necessarily any tougher than any of the other patients we have seen here (including a 15 year old girl with severe chemical burns we treated yesterday.)

The Haitian culture is one of poverty but also dignity. The people here do not complain because they are accustomed to no one listening, so they do what they can with what they’ve got.

Dr. Armstrong is a neurosurgeon from humble beginnings in Bakersfield. A man with a heart full of love not only for his wife and children back home but for the injured here who he also treats like family. Wait until you here some of his soundbytes. “Dr. Ian, why are you down here?” I asked him. “Because I want to help. But also I want to be an example for my children. It’s one thing to tell them to be good people. It’s quite another to demonstrate through action not words.”

…I found small non-profit here who flies helicopters delivering food to the hungry and rescuing the sick. They are too proud to ask for help so I’m asking on their behalf. Here’s their website in case you know any pilots or someone who flies their own jet. Samaritan Air–you can donate through PayPal. Yesterday, they saved a little baby’s life.

God bless you all, and thank you for the comments and support. When I lack food and sleep I think of all you back home who are rooting for us…

…pray for Jerry [the baby from yesterdays's update] because even though he now has the best care possible we do not know if he is going to make it.

Thank God for you all. [Scott Mortensen]

Joe Hall was standing in the kitchen with me so I put the phone on speaker. I wish so much that I had a recording of it. He talked fast to try to tell everything he could since he had borrowed the phone from his tent-mate. A Haitian by birth, his tent-mate Julio moved to Florida a number of years ago and has been pastoring a church there. Since this terrible disaster in his homeland, he has returned home to Haiti to stay, leaving behind the church he pastored in Florida and everything that he had accumulated materially. His wife Suzette will join him this weekend and they will begin life again in Haiti.

Rex loves him and said they both agree that the Lord meant for them to spend these days together. Most of the tents are large enough to accommodate 4 or 5 persons, but Rex and Julio got the smallest tent and there is only room for the two of them. They pray together—–sometimes in English and sometimes in French or they sing together—–sometimes in English, sometimes in French. Rex says that he feels so at home in Haiti, because there are so many similarities to living in West Africa.

He spoke of the devastation being hard to conceive, walking in a city , block after block where buildings are leveled on both sides of the street. As he walks around, he engages practically everyone he passes in conversation and they all speak of having lost loved ones. Their only requests are for water and food. He told of two examples of children asking for food at the orphanage where their tent is set up. The volunteers have been instructed not to give away food or water but to respond that they came with medical supplies. This is a tough thing to do, but necessary to keep a riot from breaking out because so many people are thirsty and hungry. .

He told about a young man who came up to him and said, “I am hungry”. So Rex gave the pat response, “we came with medical supplies”. The boy turned away but another boy came up to Rex and asked, “Did you see him, did you really see him?” He assured this second young boy that certainly he had seen the boy and heard his request. But then the young boy challenged him again, “but didn’t you see in his eyes….he is starving.”

HIdden in Rex’s pocket was a protein bar that he had brought in his week’s supply of food and he wanted to give the child food. However, there were many people around and he knew that it would be chaotic. People would stampede toward him to get food, and he only had that one protein bar. Later, he was happy to see the boy alone who had challenged him about seeing the boy who was starving, and he quietly gave him the protein bar and told him to divide it 2 ways and give that boy the other half. The young boy said, “No, I will give him all of it”. Rex was skeptical that would happen, but a short time later the starving boy approached Rex with the entire bar and humbly thanked him.

That wasn’t the only time he saw the children act in this unselfish way. There was a young girl standing nearby when he started eating from his meal supply: a package of peanut butter and crackers. He took out one of the crackers and gave to the little girl. As soon as she had taken it, she call the name of a young boy. He came to her and she divided the peanut butter cracker in half and shared with him. At that point, Rex gave the little girl the entire package, knowing that she would share it.

He would interject from time to time that he was so glad that he was there or that it was just great being there, so I finally got a chance to talk and asked if he was even going to come home. To that he started telling a little about how difficult the living situation is. But, he didn’t dwell on that long. There was so much to share. For instance, there was a team member in their group who prayed for a blind man…..a first he saw a bright light, they prayed again, he saw the shadows of people, they prayed again, he counted fingers of the man who held them up in front of him. Then Rex prayed for a deaf man. After the prayer he walked some distance behind the man so that he could not see him. He instructed the man to clap each time he heard a clap. He responded perfectly because the formerly deaf man HEARD Rex clapping his hands.

Finally he slowed down a little and explained that he had used to many of Julio’s phone minutes and had to get off the phone. At that point, I got the chance to say, “Happy Birthday Honey, or had you forgotten that it is your birthday?”

Well, he was quiet for a few seconds and he said with astonishment, “Is today the 26th?” And I assured him that it was. He had forgotten that today was his birthday. He closed out his conversation by saying with deep conviction, “We have to come back!!! Others from among us have to come and help.”

I wish everyone of you could have heard him…….but you will soon. He won’t be back at church on Sunday morning but should arrive back in S. California sometimes later in the day on Sunday. Rex kept saying how he could feel so strongly the Lord’s presence even amid the devastation and human suffering. Somehow, hearing about hungry children sharing, a blind man seeing, a deaf man hearing….. affirmed why Rex feels so strongly the Lord’s presence in Port au Prince and why even under such terrible conditions that he could be so joyful…..”IN HIS PRESENCE IS FULLNESS OF JOY!!!”.
